The FAO will advise governments to tackle rising food prices

The United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has organized a series of seminars in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East to advise government officials on how to make decisions due to rising prices food.

In a statement, the FAO has explained that last February, world food prices rose again for the eighth consecutive month, with increases in all commodity groups under observation, less sugar, according to the index developed by the United Nations agency, has warned that the relationship between supply and demand for cereals could tighten in the period 2010-2011.

The aim of the seminars organized by FAO is to exchange experiences on the crisis in food prices of 2007-2008, and learn more about the various advantages and disadvantages of the actions outlined in the latest edition of FAO 'Guide policy and programmatic interventions in countries to cope with rising food prices. "

"FAO considers it essential that countries review their policy options and depart from the decisions that might exacerbate the situation," warned the deputy director general of FAO, He Changchui. In his view, the latest food crisis aggravated the situation in some countries because they decided to impose export restrictions or made "panic buying."

The director general of the FAO has stressed that governments should focus on "soften" the impact of rising food prices on the poor and have to take measures to encourage investment in agriculture.

The seminars organized by FAO to advise on how to deal with rising food prices will be assisted by officials from the ministries of Agriculture, Trade and Finance from 20 countries and representatives of farmer organizations and other stakeholders in this field, as the private sector, regional bodies and partners in development.

Also participating senior representatives of Asian Development Bank, European Union, the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation and the United States Government. The meetings will include the participation of partner agencies such as FAO Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP).

The seminars, two days, starting this March - the first of which will be held this Wednesday and Thursday in Bangkok (Thailand) - and will continue until the end of next June.

FAO has indicated that these forums are intended to raise awareness of existing policy options to address rising food prices and make immediate interventions specific to countries in response to this trend.

Another goal is to raise awareness on how countries can track, update and disseminate information on price changes, policy measures and results. "The outcome of the seminars is to allow countries to adopt better-informed policies to address rising food prices and their awareness of opportunities for collaboration and support provided by development partners," stated in its letter FAO.
